WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST VISIT TO CHURCHILL DENTISTRY

Your first visit to Churchill Dentistry of Carrollwood typically consists of a full examination, a series of x-rays, and a dental teeth cleaning.  We ask that you bring your previous x-rays, if available.  If you are in good oral health and lack periodontal problems, a regular cleaning can be performed the same day.  An oral cancer exam is done as well.

Do you have dental pain? Dentists often have to be detectives to find out the cause of your pain, since oral pain can be misleading.  Dr. Churchill’s philosophy is to eliminate the simple things first, a cost savings you, the patient.  Pain is usually a lagging indicator, meaning that by the time you notice a problem, a lot of damage has already occurred.  Severe dental pain is often caused by the nerve from inside your tooth or an infection and needs to be addressed by a dentist.

WHY DOES MY TOOTH HURT?

Teeth are living, or vital, structures.  They have their own blood supply and nerve supply, below the enamel.  A cavity starts in the enamel and passes through toward the center of the tooth, where the nerve is, causing pain.  This is often when patients come to the dentist, when they are in pain and faced with a root canal and a crown or, if finances are an issue, an extraction.  It is much better for you and your pocketbook to fix a tooth when it requires a filling!

I BRUSH AND FLOSS, AREN'T MY TEETH OKAY?

Don’t be under the impression that simply brushing and flossing will keep problems at bay.  Many people mistakenly believe that if it doesn't hurt, their teeth are fine.  Decay lurks larger under the visible surface-that’s why dentists take x-rays and why when you look at your teeth, they look fine.  Sometimes, a tooth is already dead and in such cases, people feel nothing until the infection becomes acute (ie. Your face may swell).  Untreated infections can lead to serious complications.  Remember, by the time you feel pain or your tooth breaks, a substantial amount of damage has already occurred.
